Seinfeld was shot on film open matte, so for the original 4:3 aspect ratio they were blocking off the sides. When they recomposed them for 16:9 HD, going back to the original film, that meant they weren't totally butchering the top and bottom of the picture, since those zones are usually composed as headroom/footroom. 

It's marginally acceptable if it's been shot open matte, like Seinfeld, but otherwise infuriating.

See, the fake looking special effects thing doesn't make any sense to me. 1080p is still half to 1/4 of the resolution than you'd see in a theater, so if they look fake on your TV, they'd look faker in the theater. Unless you have motion smoothing on, like this article talks about.
