All credit to Trent Reznor for writing it, but in my opinion this is the definitive version of the incredibly poignant song.

This is so interesting to me, not only as a great pop song, but also because of the video. The overall style is very ‘80s (albeit slicked up considerably from that era), and so is singer Elly Jackson’s punky, defiantly unpretty but very deliberate makeup and hair, yet it’s a 2009 release.

Originally presented without comment, I feel I want to add one now. This song reminds me of a friend I had a long time ago... someone I wish I could have saved. I loved her very much - not romantically, more like as a sister - and there was ultimately nothing I could do.

I grew up in a small town that was almost tribal in nature, the social demarcations were so intensely observed. I rebelled against this structure, choosing my friends for who they were, not for our assorted assigned positions, and while my parents were very proud of me for that, it got me a lot of backlash.
