Ah, gotcha. I think MS made this an option to prevent access directly to the internal HD. That said, it would be nice to have a console that is much more friendly both to internal and external upgrades.

With the PS4 you can take the actual drive from the external and install it into the system. I was surprised at how easy the process was. Just slide off the glossy plastic bit, remove 1 screw I think and swap the drive. Then you just need a thumbdrive to download and install the firmware and you are set.
