There is also a hidden danger in liking wrenching TOO much, in that it is easy to think that you need projects that challenge you. I mean, intellectually I completely agree, but on some cars there does seem to be a degree of magic and uncertainty. For instance, I once had a VW Rabbit with an intermittent starter issue. This is just good practice in general - I always move the gearshift (on my manual cars) before starting it. Also, it seems like it helps to just reset the muscle memory of how the shift pattern feels, which on my Vanagon is incredibly vague.
