The articles talk about how one of the significant risk factors that leads to violence against trans people is the perception they are deceptive about their gender, a perception that millions and millions of Netflix viewers can watch Chappelle perpetuate to raucous laughter and applause.

right, trans people haven’t faced discrimination

Chappelle’s already been paid. When Chappelle repeatedly misgenders trans people and accuses them of being deceptive, that harms trans people.

Yes, she was. That’s why she leaked the information.

I know Netflix gets to dictate the terms of her employment. I’m not saying they weren’t allowed to do what they did. I’m pointing out that protest typically doesn’t ask authority for its permission. That’s kind of the point.

I wasn’t responding to that other commenter saying how they think things seemed. I was responding to them saying they were disagreeing with “some” trans people, but still trans, by pointing out that from what I’ve seen, the bulk of the trans community has some problem with what Chappelle has said. If so, that would

Notice how I said “it sure seems.”  That’s called a qualifier to signify that the assertion is based on my personal perception. I read a lot of trans writers and others who have come out against this special, I haven’t seen too many defenses out of this community for this (although I have seen some). Do you have

I dunno, “you shouldn’t call people transphobic bigots” seems every bit as speech-limiting as “you shouldn’t make transphobic jokes.” (Incidentally, would you think it nonsense that a white person who refused to date a black person or an Asian person or whatever was a bigot? Something can be both a personal

It’s also possible to be pro trans and think censorship is bad.”

Do you or do you not think that people should or should not call a person a transphobic bigot if they refuse to date a trans person?

Yes, you should tell Dave that criticism is not the same thing as actual harm.

“some trans people” is carrying a LOT of weight in that first sentence, because the bulk of the commentary coming out of the LGBTQ+ community, from organizations representing those groups to prominent individuals, is that Chappelle’s bits are problematic. You’re not pro trans if you refuse to listen to the concerns

YOU’RE the one who wants people to limit their speech. That’s the point I’m making you idiot. You’re the one limiting other people’s speech. So is Dave! One of the things he said about trans people in a past special was they should not talk about their plight in front of black people!

Typically, if it’s really critical that information not to be shared outside of the company, it won’t be widely shared within a company that has nearly 10,000 employees.

Also, I have family in West Virginia, including a couple who were coal miners. The coal industry is important in West Virginia, and yet I have met zero people in West Virginia whose dream for their kids was the hard, dangerous, backbreaking work of coal mining.

Love to let authority dictate the terms on which authority can be challenged.

Yes, criticizing an artist is the same as fucking lynching people. And the people criticizing Chappelle are the ones who are unhinged.

You’re complaining about the level of control some people want to exercise over others, all while making the implication that people aren’t allowed to express the opinion about what it means if you refuse to date trans people.

White people say the same shit about affirmative action

Is it really possible to be pro-trans but to completely dismiss what so many in the trans community are telling you about this special?
