It does seem notable that in the trailer’s placeholder image the two review quotes they’ve chosen to highlight are “fiercely original and deeply personal” and “a blasphemous Molotov cocktail of a movie”, neither of which suggest a movie that is actually good.

Set up is overrated and unnecessary. There is no reason they couldn’t just do the whole Galactus story in this one movie. There wasn’t months of build up in the comics, he just shows up. His initial story, from Silver Surfer heralding his arrival to the resolution is covered in 3 issues (and about a quarter of those

I may be misremembering, but didn’t he use a stencil or something in the Netflix shows?

It’s not difficult to see that sort of hesitant faithfulness in the game adaptations we’re getting in ways—like Fallout’s desire to pitch-perfectly replicate power armor and pip boys to be just so. There’s certainly pitfalls to such rigidity

That’s weird. The behind the scenes features on Netflix suggest they knew by its very nature that it would have to be digitally replaced in every shot, and were taking clean scans of the sets in order to recreate the reflections from scratch.

More importantly, Dune has cleared $600m worldwide and must surely be profitable, so Villeneuve probably will get the chance to make Messiah and finish his trilogy.

The Flashpoint story is such strong source material

[HBO] wanted 10 seasons not just because they wanted the maximum content but because they knew the story would take that long to tell.

Agreed. The quality actually stayed fairly consistent though the first six seasons, including in many storylines that had long outpaced the source material.

I think it’s one full season. She’s expected to leave during season 15.

It’s presumably a nod to the “×”s often found in Japanese titles, and I believe the correct pronunciation for those is “cross*”, so it would be “Godzilla cross Kong”.

Engagement at Polygon seems to be minimal outside of videogame-related stuff. Scrolling though a few pages of TV content for example, articles about Halo get plenty of responses, but most other stuff struggles to get more than 2 or 3 comments.

So, in the undoubtedly brief time we have left before io9 gets killed too, what alternatives do you all recommend?

Sure you can. Have enough kaiju fighting, but also have well defined human characters with stories worth telling.

I watched this episode last night, and was really impressed with the sequence. I felt the effects were inconsistent, but the way it was put together meant that didn’t really matter. What they got right was the tension in the build up, the brief moment of cool when you realise what the plan was, and then the horror at

Let’s be honest, the time dilation was just an excuse to bring back Keiko and explain why Kurt Russell wasn’t quite as old as he should’ve been.

I was a fan of Ryuhei Kitamura’s work up to that point (Versus, Alive, Aragami, Azumi, Sky High) and was looking forward to what he did with Godzilla, but the result was an incoherent mess, and a brief joke at GINO’s expense didn’t come close to saving it.

I would argue that Final Wars was awful, whereas reducing GMK to “dumb all out monster brawler fun” does a disservice to a terrific movie.

I haven’t seen the new Ghostbusters, but I’m not remotely surprised to see the reactions here are lukewarm. It leaves me wondering why there isn’t an open channel for the facinating 3 Body Problem adaptation instead (or even as well)? It seems much more likely to provoke discussion than another just about watchable

I didn’t say it would save the site, I said it’s an attempt to. I also said it wouldn’t work — it’ll delay the inevitable is all.
