I dunno... Everything I’ve read about current management paints them as rather soulless themselves. This basically sounds like a side-grade.

I think one contributing factor is the shift to delivery shopping. A lot of gum and mints are presented as Point Of Purchase items; sitting right by the register as you wait to checkout your groceries and other items.

To be fair, a lot of those early female protags also tended to be filtered through male gaze and preconceptions of how a woman should be.
