We have some 301 and 404 permalinks in the sitemap, which is not good for SEO. Some (all?) of the 404s are posts that were reframed from Gawker, but the original post doesn’t exist anymore. This PR filters those out.
The upload worked the first time but failed on second try.
Sometimes Google tries to crawl our preview pages, which results in an HTTP error. We haven’t found the root cause for this, but we made sure only published posts are returned. The new endpoint is used by the sitemap only.
We have a sitemap for permalink pages from each week, currently the parent site and vertical homepages are listed in all of them. We are now listing them only in the most recent sitemap.

We are now following proper requirements for slideshows in the MSN feeds and have also created a slideshow only feed for The Onion.
Posts with a custom share image set should still have the default/calculated share image in the sidebar.
Here is the default behavior for what should be saved as the LEAD image or og:image:
Most of Editorial creates a draft with text and images, tags, etc. and add the lead image last. This was causing the wrong image to be saved as the og:image when distribution tools were not in use.
