Yes, this exactly. Look at the glass back of a 4x5 or 8x10 camera with the lens open, then imagine smaller and smaller film/sensor sizes with that same lens. It’s easy to see how nothing has changed about the lens but the recorded image changes with the change in film/sensor size.
