Seeing how well mixed together the Pacific Rim/Evangelion mashup trailers are, I'm thinking it's all intentional. He probably was interested in the live action Eva project from a decade ago, and when that fell through, he probably decided to make his own take on it.

I see more of a Eva influence than a Power Rangers influence. These shots in particular are pretty much identical.
