Is it fair to ask why this was so disturbing to the daughter then? or can we assume it's because children are taught that those are private parts and it's wrong to talk about them?

I agree. This might be one of those self-critical moments where we ask could ourselves what it actually is about prostitution/sex work that bothers us, and whether it should bother us (in a collective sense—I don't want to make assumptions about individual beliefs).

I guess it takes skillz???

How did Anne Frank learn about the clitoris? Seems she's still exploring and learning, but still, she seems to have heard of a clitoris somewhere!

It seems like the exact same argument everyone else has offered, including myself.

But now little Ansel can't use the napkins! He'll get magic marker ink on his face. C'mon, Mom!

I actually agree. There's something absurd about the proportion of Westerosians who casually rape people or get raped, love torturing/get tortured, etc. I know the medieval world must have been rough (real-life or fantasy), but at some point it just seems ridiculous, and then I start feeling complicit in all the

It gives exactly as many fucks as whoever's speaking it, which is most often 0 fucks. But that's usually great, because that's how we get interesting dialects and awesome slang phrases. And Yiddish, and English. Although sometimes there are tragedies, like ATM machine.

I think so. I've always said 'hula dancing' until I thought about it just now!

Hula dance—that's another one

I think when people make the 'evolving language' argument, they mean to say that redundant phrases come to have a meaning in themselves. So 'chai tea' in English means a particular kind of spiced tea, or a 'conniption-fit' just means a particularly spazzy fit, and is a phrases in itself. If those phrases become

Ah, there it is. I guess I haven't commented/gotten replies often enough to notice! Thanks!

Does everyone have a 'dismiss' button? I'm a regular reader and occasional commenter, but I usually end up down in the grey, and I can't find the buttons of which you speak!

It seems like there's a pattern, when the meaning of the term isn't clear in English, the redundancy affirms the unclear meaning—like in ATM [machine], chai [tea], monsoon [season] (thanks, calei), conniption [fit].

I think what's actually going on is that some nerds are Star-Warsing-up their sex, not sexing up their Star Wars. If we're going to nit pick here.

I don't think you can make rules for using words or phrases. There are a lot of words people use commonly that were at one point or another grammatically incorrect, or redundant, or foreign etc. I was under the impression that most 'English' words are borrowed from other languages, or at least a large proportion of

I guess in the 1930s, potato-headedness was the cat's pajamas

I'd like to add Pocahontas to the list. She schooled all of the men in the movie, which also didn't end in a marriage.

I actually just got to thinking: as someone who has done a lot of research on different religions, have you ever thought about what they all have in common? or what questions they all ask? Maybe looking for that would be somewhat fulfilling in itself. I don't know, just thinking out loud.
