I don't know, you must've been out of the loop during the PS1 days. Crash Bandicoot 1-3 + CTR are beloved critically acclaimed commercial hits. Naughty Dog moved on to make Jak and Daxter and now just concluded the excellent Uncharted series. They make triple A games.

You're not only paying for a beta. You're paying for the beta, all the updated versions and the final version when it comes out. Seems like a win to me. We're paying in advance for a final product and get to play with it while it works its way to completion.
