Our tracking methods were much worse before 1950, so that’s why the trend was much higher then. (For example, most methods of measuring wind were blown away before reaching category 5-level wind speeds.)

Did you click the link? Sandy was a category 3 major hurricane when it hit Cuba. It had category 1-force winds when it hit the Northeastern US only because it became extratropical, which spreads its energy out over a larger area – so lower max winds, but its size was the largest on record for the Atlantic.
