The 1918 Spanish flu pandemic was like this. Young, healthy people were knocked out and killed quickly by it, while a lot of older people were okay because they’d already been exposed to similar germs in previous years.

You could easily be an asymptomatic carrier and infect people, though. Per Harvard medical school, 20-30% of people carrying the virus have no symptoms. And I’ve seen higher numbers listed elsewhere. So you may not ever “get sick” but you can still be spreading it to people via talking, breathing near them, etc.

I don’t know why so many people out there have the mistaken notion that the flu shot is supposed to be 100% effective. That would be great if it was, but clearly its effectiveness varies year to year. It’s still better than nothing, which is apparently not good enough for some people?

My favorite is when people say “I got the shot and then I got sick like a week later, so the shot clearly doesn’t work!”

Per the CDC, the flu shot takes about 2 weeks to form antibodies in your system. So if you got the flu 1 week after your shot, that’s not a failure of the shot, it’s just shitty timing.

The flu is no joke. Last time I had it, I spent half a week sleeping, shivering, and near hallucinating before I went to urgent care and ended up getting IV fluids. Not nearly as bad as, say, being in the hospital, but it was an absolutely HORRIBLE experience.

I have a fb friend who was livid about having to get a flu shot for work. She works as a goddamn surgical assistant.
