It will never fail to piss me off that the generations that got their college educations practically for free then realized they could make a shitton of money by making their children and grandchildren buy theirs at exorbitant prices.  

I would expect an A380 to be more expensive to operate than a 787, the question would be how much more it costs per passenger. Probably not too different there.

I think it’s mostly about the switch from the hub and spoke to a more point to point system for long haul travel, which was enabled by smaller efficient twin jets like the 787. Only the world’s largest airports support the A380, limiting its usefulness.
