The point is that security systems are a major deterrent for home invasions, which are already exceedingly rare. Even if someone were to break into your home, brandishing a gun only ensures that the burglars will take means, likely violent, to protect themselves.

If home invasions are your concern, you could try getting a decent home security system. The chances of the home security system either accidentally or purposely being used to kill a family member is also substantially lower than a gun. It's a win-win, although it won't make you feel like Rambo.
