I really didn't notice that the economic structure of the family was so traditional, until someone pointed it out. I was too distracted by the believable dynamic of the husband and wife, I guess, if not so much the kid. It's true though.

I'd agree it was a Secret Success. It's one of my dad's favorite movies, which you would think really strange too, if you knew him. He doesn't like movies that are challenging (by which I mean grim, or downbeat, or otherwise "not uplifting"). I think he must really relate to the feeling of being trapped, and finding

"Somewhat-liked" - that's it in a nutshell. I re-watched it recently with a friend, and we liked it, somewhat.  Steve Martin did start to show some range and acting ability here, though - and that was thoroughly-liked.
