By the time that my friends were telling me that it's great and I should read it (between books 2 and 3) the publication delays had already started, and the whole thing just seemed too Wheel of Time-y. This type of sprawling, epic fantasy isn't typically my thing because they have such a propensity to get out of

Tai Pan in Palo Alto - they don't do the carts, but the food's really good, and they have dim sum all week.

True, and probably less lobster there. Still, places like Cape Cod get sooo much traffic during the summer, I pretty much only go there during the fall or early spring.

They asked people where they could find various businesses - "could you tell me where to find Mianus Cleaners? Is there a library in Mianus? etc." When a friend's brother visited him at college and was asked what he wanted to do while there, he chose "rent a car and drive to Mianus so we can giggle while we ask

True, although I do think that that's usually pretty detrimental to the book itself. It sure seems like someone like GRRM can use a good editor.

It's funny - I decided not to read this series partially because I didn't trust GRRM to finish it well, but I don't at all get upset about the similar times between publications for, say, Megan Whalen Turner's Thief series. But, that's because that series is *much* better handled. They're honest with themselves

I actually like vacationing in places like that a month or so before or after their main season. It's way more relaxing, and you can still get tons of great seafood - lobster's really the only reason why I go to Maine, for instance, and that's always available.

Mianus, Connecticut got featured on an episode of Jackass, I think.

We used to live on Easy Street

Isn't a book normally finished at least a year before it's published? The first draft, at any rate? It's not like he puts down his pen and then it's off to the presses. I mean, there's multiple rounds of editing, the marketing has to be planned, they have to fit it into their existing schedule of other releases…if

Yeah, I see no reason to subject my eyeballs to that. Just looks gross.

Which is part of why I watch several animated shows, but almost none of them are ones primarily meant for adults. The only exception is Archer, which avoids the grotesque look of shows like this (although, as you said, doesn't have the smoothest animation).

My parents had a long conversation at a Chinese restaurant where the waiter kept saying "is beef", and they kept trying to explain that no, it's tripe, which is not the same thing, even if it's also from a cow.

In some ways, Dim Sum is easier, because you can just point at whatever things look tasty. Sure, you'll end up with some things you end up not liking, but that's just part of the fun, and no individual dish is too pricey. It's really very low stakes.

I have textural issues with the taro also, which is why I usually don't order it.

I've had that, but I prefer the shrimp version. I love dim sum, but I don't know the chinese names for anything. We had a great place to go to when we were living in silicon valley, but I haven't found something good where I am in the Boston burbs yet.

My husband actually prefers his cereal after it's had time to get a little soggy…he's sort of a weirdo.

My favorite food experience in Ireland was when I asked what kind of cheese a restaurant had in their "sandwich bar" thing. I asked at multiple places, and each time got a confused "It's cheese" response, in spite of the fact that, based on a visual inspection, these were clearly not the same types of cheese at each

I thought I didn't like hamburgers until I was in college - turns out, I just don't like fast food burgers. I'd made the mistake of thinking they were the same food.

I worry about one of my cousins - he's always been extremely picky about food, but he's aging out of that being socially acceptable, and I'm seeing it start to impact him more. He started getting really into sports recently, and wasn't getting enough nutritionally to support the increased activity, so he's drinking
