His last book of essays is, I think, pretty genuinely, un-smirkingly brilliant. His essays paralleling the cults-of-personality of Kurt Cobain and Karesh, and the one where he genuinely grapples with Kazinski's manifesto are pretty singular.
I don't really know who does it better. Greil Marcus is great but

Def Leppard totally rips. I bought Hysteria at a record store last weekend. Still sealed from '87. That album is so fucking good.

Well I'm the smile police, and you're all under arrest.

Don't forget What It Is, or several waves of Elvis Costellos' first album.
Also, sometimes I confuse Rhino with Ryko, they should just get together.

I mean — just — DUH. $10 a month! And I only watch what I want, they're not trying to latch me on to some Lifetime netflix or Spike netflix or Fox Sports Southwest netflix. Just the good stuff. Comcast, go a la cart, and MAYBE we can talk.

They should make a movie out of that Tron trailer.

Shit. Thank you. That was the opposite of nerd rape. That was like nerd dinner and a movie.

    OK, Wikipedia it is.

Now don't nerd rape me, but why isn't Superman still dead?

I'm sick of everyone blaming things on my severe crack addiction. True, there is no single moment quite as towering as You Could Be Mine. But there are also no lows as low as My World or Get In The Ring or nearly as much padding as ALL OF THE PLUS 7 MINUTE SONGS on Illusion. Not to mention a repeat of Don't Cry

Wait, and shame on YOU for invoking the concept of shame in a discussion about Guns and Roses.

    (edit:) …A+'s for Appetite.

Chinese Democracy is at least as good as UYI 2, which I would tolerate as an A-rated album, provided we're handing out A+'s Appetite.

    "Your ignorance knows no bounds."

Yeah, stop trying to reduce trilobiter's actually pretty well-reasoned argument to a stupid caricature. I like rap. I like the kind of rap that Winona or whoever is talking about. I like that song where Eminem kills and buries his wife with his daughter tagging along. I like when Snoop nonchalantly shoots somebody

And 'To the 5…' is solid. They're in their Isley's-in-the-70s or Snoop-right-now period where everything they do is pretty great, but that means you can't reasonably expect a Sabotage or a Hey Ladies.
This song rips by the way. Summer - I am coming for you.

I like these songs too - especially the Morning. Dude needs to hook up with some people who have fun when they party though.

Still buying CDs, still reading newspapers. Still listening to Radiohead.
