Yes, I was going to say -- I don’t think she was withholding vitriol toward married men!

The exact quote from Bella is “This is why I be hating straight white guys,” not “single white guys.” An important distinction, in my mind at least.

I disagree we are not supposed to like Arabella. Indeed. This show is all about making you question your opinions. Is what Kwame did wrong? What about Terry’s threesome in Italy? Should the white lady from the support group be forgiven for her teen racist based actions? The complexity and nuance to the way it tells Read more

Did anyone else catch the evil/alter-ego Arabella hovering over her bed in the first scene? She was only visible for a few seconds, but it freaked me the hell out. I wasn’t even sure what it was at first...thought it was some Ringu ghost girl or something.

I just wanted to say, thank you so much for these weekly recaps, Ashley. Reading through your analysis of everything has really helped me contextualize these jam-packed episodes better. I caught myself doing double takes and second-guessing myself with all the complexity Coel brings to the discussion of sexual Read more

Poor Kwame. He was so so brave to be there and remain there for as long as he did, until the pressure and experience was just too much. It broke my heart. Read more

Yes, that’s true! I think that’s often something a lot of trauma survivors have to cope with, the non-linear experience of emotions and realizations. After the initial shock you really don’t know what phase in your grief is going to come next.

Yeah, I think her realizations and actions are a bit stop and start. Which makes a lot of sense to me. Anyone would be ‘lucky’ if there were a linear process to recovery.

I felt for him too. I kept wanting him to ask for the ‘RapeBusters’ duo instead of wading through with that dimwitted goose of a cop he was dealing with. Plus, on top of his dimness, he was hostile af!

This episode was an A for me because they used a Janelle Monae song for the ending/credits and I’m too easily swayed by her presence in anything. Read more

I got the impression that this was more Arabelle coming back to herself as she was before the assault, rather than a distinct change in character. Weeks have gone by and she’s been doing a lot of work on herself to get where she was, as much as we don’t get to see that work at length.

I felt this episode a little jarring? Everything Arabella was experiencing felt so relatable in the first episodes, but her ability now to be so vocal and label things for what they are felt rushed even if we get glimpses into her constant triggers. Read more

I feel so much for Kwame. Especially since he’s seen Arabella go thru the process with competent investigators, to have the experience he did in the police station must be so invalidating. But also it's so powerful to see Kwame and Arabella asking questions about what happened to them. This show is so much.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful recaps! I just finished the episode and something I’m curious about too is how the show has hinted at Bella’s selfishness when it comes to Terry. It seems like Terry’s ‘stage fright’ at the summit could have been alleviated a bit had Bella helped calm her down? Not that it was her Read more

Yeah the show honestly did an incredible job of showing that even though sober Terry wanted to go out and get laid, that doesn’t mean she wasn’t manipulated by two major creeps. It shows a very sex-positive individual in this situation but places no judgment on her for the situation she winds up in. I didn’t get the Read more

Kyla Pratt’s baby shower” <-- Am I crazy? There was no baby shower in this episode.

No disrespect to the author over there, but I was disappointed to find this incredible series is being recapped by a non-Black woman at Vulture. Thanks to AV Club for making the obvious right choice here. Will be stopping by weekly!
