Well the kids you think he’s killing off are the same kids that reunite as adults to kill the evil force in the second movie, so you’re a little off the mark. I know one kid dies very early on, but the story is not “clown that kills kids”

I have to be honest, I don’t think a single one of those intersects with “evil clown leads to coming of age horror.”

Could you list the umpteen evil doll/evil clown/cgi ghost retreads that are crushing the box office? I’ll even allow you to combine the three types into one. IT doesn’t count, because it is not a retread, it’s the first time it’s been a feature film.

To echo another commenter, because Stephen King wrote a pretty good story and this is the first time it’s been given more than a 90s TV miniseries budget. It has far more subtext than your average horror movie.
