my local news was covering this yesterday, it was depressing reading the comments. Basically people were saying the airline and police were fully in their rights to do what they did to him, he’s lucky he didn’t get worse, and that he should be charge with a felony for disrupting the peace on the plane.

Uhhh. what?

And we’re slipping further and further towards a corporate-government future with every day. It has nothing to do with the current climate except that the wealthy have been playing this long-game for three-hundred years at least.

There are a few good commenters over there, but man, when io9 was moved under the Gizmodo umbrella and the approved commentariats were combined? The high quality of the io9 comment sections was immediately dragged so far into the gutter you can barely see it any more.

I know. I’ve been in a comment war over there. People seem so desperate to blame this guy. I really don’t get it. The issue isn’t that this was united policy- the issue is that a nonviolent man angry about an terrible customer service issue was bloodied and injured. That is insane. Yeah, I was genuinely surprised at the comments over at Gizmodo. That’s disheartening.

Right? I’m a doctor. I’m the only specialist of my kind at my hospital. If I don’t show up, 40-50 cancer patients don’t get treated. No joke. I would have panicked if they told me I wasn’t getting home for my shift.

I posted over on Deadspin that I couldn’t believe “bodily drag a paying customer from a seat” was even on the list of possible actions to take, and had a commenter tell me that *I* was looking at it the wrong way, because what was the crew supposed to do, without the authority to offer passengers more money to…

Deadspin was awful too. So many burners jumping in to say, basically, the airline is doing you a favor and therefore you must comply with every demand.

Remember, being “disruptive and belligerent” is a crime punishable by beating in our police-state.

As long as it’s not ME being dragged off that plane. Because, hey, it never will be.... right? RIGHT?!

What do you expect?

Until one of them finds out that that was THEIR doctor, and how dare he reschedule them because he’s on “VACATION”, doesn’t he know that they had to rearrange THEIR schedules to make this appointment happen??

The comments over on Gizmodo are depressing AF. To paraphrase, the elderly doctor deserved it, should not have raised his voice, should have just used his “cell phone to re-book patients from his hotel room,” and that this whole incident has been entirely blown out of proportion.
