I really, really, really disagree about the lack of character development. It was there with both of the main characters, and the supporting crew got just enough.

I think they did that just so we could get that shot of them on the beach. Also, presumably Krennic was vaporized right then since he was up there.

It’s perfectly clear where it fits before you even walk into the theater. As long as you know that the film is about stealing the plans to the first Death Star, you automatically know it takes place before A New Hope ever begins. Because we see Leia putting the plans in R2 at the very beginning of ANH.
