Granted she was not focal in the series, BUT the times you saw her it set a tone. She was a important part in the background that framed the theme, and mood. She rarely got involved because she could give a rats ass.

All I am going to say is they hinted at it in each season. Sometimes more than once. 

They have the antagonists down pretty well.

Season 5 for (Spoilers) IS the season I have been hoping for.

Kudos the series is in fact pretty damn good. I do not like the stories being crunched so close together, but I get the whole big budget adaption thing.
