While I agree from a good copy standpoint, it just feels more than a little cold to talk about the reputation of the band in this context.

Wouldn't a "consolation prize" indicate that he didn't win what he was going for (successful heart surgery and, y'know, living), but at least he came away with something (being internet famous)?

And that 25% thing aside, it's hardly "most" of the players in the NHL playing overseas right now. Most of them don't meet a talent requirement and as we've seen written elsewhere, insurance fees for NHL talent can be exorbitant.
I think that's meant to convey what the official scoring was. As in, if you were look up a game play-by-play after the fact, it would read lateral instead of touchdown pass.
