it's funny, around age 5 they'd introduce me like this: "this is my mom, soledad o'brien". creepy. so i put a stop to that.
thanks i appreciate that
great question, and tough to do. i literally work all the time. docs are very time consuming and if you're genuinely involved (as opposed to having producers knock it out for you) it's very difficult to have a day job too. so i dont know
haha. please send email to aforementioned 11 year old daughter and her ten year old sister who are hating on me because i won't allow a weekday sleepover!
thanks to your dad!
keep your mouth shut. out work everyone. don't share your personal drama. be strategic, always.
it's a lot more work, but frankly, everything everyone pretty much has ever said on the record (and off the record sometimes!) is searchable, so if you're strategic about how to structure an interview, it can work
i'd be a little more aggressive with time, with cutting people off, with pushing people on factual errors. i cut people off, i get criticized for it, but honestly politicians will go on interminably if you don't.
yup. but really only from trusted sources—my husband is great with constructive feedback. my best friend, kim, used to be my executive producer at NBC and at CNN, AND she's the Godmother to all my kids, so she pretty much knows me 360.
i'd never have time to tweet
haha. officially, no—i love all our panelists equally! and the choice is made by a bunch of folks, my ep shannon, our bookers, our producers and others. we take into account schedules, topics of conversation etc.
i tend to do it in real life also. it makes debates with friends/spouse very interesting
i dont even know what that means. information is more often about context, and comparison to what was said before. a fact standing alone often isn't particularly helpful.
i'll be covering the vp debate and the next presidential debate, so it will be really interesting to see it in person, vs watching on tv from my bed.
oh my goodness, so many people. lot's of people i met through documentaries—especially Steve Perry. Interviewed New Orleans Jazz Orchestra bandleader Irvin Mayfield years ago, and now he's one of my dear friends. Marlen Esparza was the focus on Latino in America2, and my whole family watched her box in the…
i'm not sure of the solution. people have to support programs that attempt to have both sides on and ask tough questions of everybody.
know your weakness. i'm very forgetful, and trust me, having kids does not help. so i make lists, all over the place, tons of them, and i operate off them all the time. i am obsessed with my lists because without them i'd be lost. figure out what works for you and then stick to it.
it's not particularly helpful. people cannot be illegal. you can overstay your visa, you can be in the act of illegally jumping over a border fence, you can be in the country without proper documents. i like details.
hard to say—so many categories. lindsay lohan's mom the other day. fascinating. the debate: fascinating. virtually every person i intvd in hurricane katrina coverage: fascinating. virtually every intv i've done for a documentary: fascinating
