There's actually a remarkable shift in tone in that piece after you get past the first 4-5. It seems like the original article was probably going for "hottest" as in a "hot topic" but someone decided that wasn't what they wanted to go for and threw in the beginning and some generic cover art to "attract readership"

It seems like another case of "let's all do the wrong thing," in my opinion. Tasteless jokes in public, check. Taking photos of people and posting them online without consent, check.
