Well I would disagree by a few degrees and argue that the environmental movement gets painted in the color of its most extreme elements by our media and its opponents. Like how PETA gets to stand-in for all animal right's activists and make them all look like twits.

Yeah unfortunately a lot of my fellow environmentalists have an unjustified knee-jerk reaction against anything nuclear that matches the more-justified-by-history knee-jerk mistrust of energy companies.

Yeah I've been reading about next-generation nuclear plants after suggestions on this thread. Strange that it's regularly left out of the debate on energy.

Interesting. I wonder what the barriers are to commercial application? I am assuming the initial capital investment is an insane amount of money.

Interesting I wasn't aware of that. Wouldn't there always be a small amount of waste though.

Well there's also a lot of radioactive suits, robotic arms and other non-uranium equipment that ends up with a long half-life after you have to shut down a reactor. I guess we could catapult that at 3rd world religious fanatics and shrug our shoulders at the consequences.

Solar power production is close to Moore's Law in terms of scaling for output vs. cost, but the challenge continues to be energy storage for now. Wind is looking like a big fat 'Meh' at this point.

Can I just be the only commenter to say I appreciate this article? Both in that it confirms that yes there is radiation and that its from Japan and that science says it's safe. There has been a lot of garbage fear mongering flying around facebook about this lately but this article lays it out as it is.

The biggest threat from Nuclear power is that we still don't know what to do with the waste from the plants with a half-life of so many thousands of years. (too lazy to look it up) Which is itself more of a long-term social problem than a technological one. (Guys, don't build condos here, we are serious)

Also Dragons aren't real.

The real question to ask is "How would people try to make money off this discovery." You'd have crackpot services offering to "Send your voice to the Aliens!" and then an arms race of telescopes and listening tools trying to look at their space-zeppelins or whatever to find out how they work and how to copy any

EARTH THINGS FOR EARTHLINGS!

I'm thinking we'd have a large constituency who'd immediately advocate to build a missile big enough to blast the new-found planet to smithereens.

Is Super 8 is an 80s movie?

Hopefully nobody tries to "Jar-Jar' up some chuckles using the Gully Dwarves as comic foils.

Shockingly Pedestrian. My wife and I locked eyes across a crowded dance floor. It was midnight and our respective office Christmas parties had both led us her. She noticed me first. I was dancing with co-workers and made eye contact with this CUTE red-head in a green shoulderless dress. I looked away, then looked back
