Maybe not you or most of us here. But the gazillion of mindless people hyped from pretty trailers, yes. And that's the majority despite what you may think.
FF serie isn't struggling at all, at least not money wise. It's just fans of whatever previous opus that keep complaining about this or that. I've enjoyed all main title FF to varying degrees and was never disappointed by any.

Yes, the beginning is harsh. Evenetually you'll learn what to avoid and what to kill, then once you gain a few levels and improve armor, it's much better.

An anime episode is generally about 2 chapters, so more like 20 away. Besides, as far as I could read, there are only 13 episodes planed for the anime now because it's way too close to the manga.
That flashback is clearly here on purpose, in the manga too, to make you go nuts and wonder if the supposedly main character is really dead or will return somehow.
