The thing is, those never had the option of going online so they never had updates for the games or system that you downloaded. System updates could perhaps be installed via USB, but games weren't designed for that.
The big problem with this is. What if you already wear glasses? It seems that Glass can be worn comfortably even with regular glasses.

The desktop really is still the preferred mode unless everything you want to do is in apps. I run it on my laptop and I use it exactly the same as I used Vista or 7. Though now of course I can use some addional apps if I like.
As for track pads, if you're buying a Win8 laptop you should make sure the track pad has edge detection so that it knows when you're swiping in from an edge. I have it installed on an older laptop and it does work, but it works like a mouse and is kind of a pain to get into the corners constantly vs. Just swiping in…
I bet you they rushed it just to make sure it was released in time to compete with Surface and other Windows tablets.
it probably is a home run when used for it's intended purpose, as a tablet with keyboard accessory.
