Sadly the first election of Schwarzenegger was partly due to too many people loving the idea of voting for the star of Total Recall in a recall election. Okay, it was just one guy in one of those "What do you think about...?" sections but still that sets me off in a rage.

You're right, considering what she's done covering TV, it seems pretty likely she was sloppy as a foreign correspondent too. That raises the question of if the NYT thinks so little of TV that they're willing to dump a bad reporter there... and why they bother with a subject they seem to find so unimportant. Why not

IDK, considering Stanley's history of cluelessnes I could see this being even more offensive if a trans actress were in the role.

If Buzzfeed's reporting is right, she has the job because she's bad at it. Or, at least, the NYT doesn't care about TV and doesn't think it needs someone with an expertise in TV or a history of reporting on television. Stanley doesn't have a history in reporting about TV, she's an experienced Foreign Correspondent. If

Exactly. There are several style guides that make this clear. Properly addressing the gender of a trans person (fictional or real) isn't confusing if you consult the guides. Stanley has a history of being clueless but the NYT is supposed to have the staff to prevent the misgendering from happening.

I know that there are a lot of issues with the HFPA but they're at least able to get the stick out of their ass long enough to acknowledge the new an interesting instead of the Emmys' constant declaration of irrelevance.

FWIW, I believe she was nominated last year.

I suspect it's like salting pineapple to make it sweeter, basically the salt occupies the bitter tastebuds so they don't note the bitter flavors in the coffee.

Thanks for that explanation! TBH, I'm one of those people who usually orders black drip coffee or an Americano, so this reminds me of when coffee shops tried to differentiate cafe au lait from a latte, but it's good to learn the specifics.

I was an odd kid. One of my young goals in life was to see a TV station sign on and sign off (not in the same day, just to see both). Therefore, those national anthem videos remind me of a childlike sense of accomplishment... which was usually followed by the realization where wasn't anything to do now that the TV was

Apparently, Mitt Romney is so experienced with 7-11 food he can tell 7-11 cookies apart from the local bakery chain's cookies.

Actually, all this talk of shave ice is making me miss Ice Gardens in Aiea which does a southeast Asian-inspired shave ice with mochi balls, flan or other odd toppings. That said, one of the Obama daughters was photographed eating one with a red syrup and its also giving me a craving for Li Hing Mui shave ice. (But

It's one of the many quirks of Hawaiian creole, which comes from different immigrant populations trying to learn English and to communicate with each other.

My husband and I did this once and it was an experience we haven't forgotten. We still talk about the pineapple upside-down cake with foie gras (an aperitif, not a dessert) paired with a reisling that lost its sweetness after you ate the foie gras. Everything was perfectly combined and wine pairings rarely work magic

I wish I could recommend you a million times. Visual data wins.

Hawaii still conquers and image of being a getaway paradise for the affluent and those who can afford it.

It wasn't the vacation Bush and Regan were criticized for but the amount of time they spent vacationing.

Wrong. He was criticized for spending huge amount of time on vacation, including almost 70 vacation days in his first year in office, not counting time spent at Camp David.

No. They gave him grief for breaking the record for Presidential vacation days.

I'm reminded of Cokie Robets (of that "liberal media") tsk tsking about Obama going to Hawaii for vacation near Election Day 2008 because it was probably too exotic a vacation spot and he should have gone to Myrtle Beach. Seriously. She apparently did not realize how racist that sounded.
