A hate crime. In Coon Rapids. Minnesota. Who woulda thunk it.

It’s named after Coon creek (and it’s rapids) which runs through the area. The creek was named back in the early 1800s because the settlers hunted raccoons in the lowlands around the creek. Much later the township got named Coon creek rapids, later shortened to Coon rapids.

“Minnesota Nice” is less nice and more silent judging, passive aggression, and friendly but distant chit chat. It seems to cause people to snap occasionally. I moved up here from elsewhere in the midwest and sometimes feel like I scare people with my bluntness (which is still not that blunt).

Hey, her target was speaking foreign, was black and was wearing a Muslim head-covering. What was she supposed to do, faced with such brazen existing-while-not-being-a-white-Christian? As a good American, she was practically forced into action.

Nope. This is Minnesota. There is a large Middle Eastern and Northern Africa population there. And the victim was wearing a hijab.

Nope. It was Swahili. Got a few minutes? Learn to say, “Hello,” in Swahili. It sounds nothing like Spanish.

I want to think it was just named for raccoons, but you’d think they would have given it second thoughts by now. But then this just came out last week, so they are not alone.

Can you imagine if an American was assaulted for not speaking Italian in some tiny village in Italy? Or for not speaking French in some petit town in Burgundy? I keep trying to read this but cannot get past “ Coon Rapids” what even.

I loved (from the article I read) that she’s so progressive she has a hyphenated last name—but can’t stand people speaking foreign languages.

I really, really, really want that look to be remorse, but I’m guessing it’s “THIS IS WRONG, WHY AM I THE ONE IN JAIL, THIS WORLD HAS GONE TOPSY-TURVY”
