They can’t require specific documents for your I9 beyond the requirements listed on the form. Plenty of people provide either their passport to cover both ID and work authorization, or use a different document for citizenship such as a birth certificate.

Kinda seems like you missed the key points of both of those stories: The anecdote about the damaged suitcases was about how the employees were vociferously criticized in the company Slack channel, where literally everyone is. That’s not good management by any normal company’s lights.
