I think the bigger question to ask is why pretending that the townsfolk disagreed with your politics (whatever they may be) made it suddenly okay to do mean things to them. You even admit that it “[felt] good” to be cruel to them once you could mentally ‘other’ them.

Am I seriously the only one that liked the original’s flashlight? Having to choose between visibility (ie, exploration) and combat not only increased the tension but helped break up the game play. Plus, fighting hordes of demons by only the light of your gunfire was, and still is, a unique and terrifying experience.
