I am going to go with camshaft technology. Even with camshaft phasing and adding extra cams, a given cam profile is a design of compromise. A profile is only truly ideal for a given RPM range and load yet we are trying to use that one or maybe two cams for every combination of load and RPMs. Today, engineers must…
Carburetors. Virtually gone in modern cars, and was supplanted by fuel injection and now direct injection. It stuck around for a good while and was good for what it was, but with fuel economy and emissions being a bigger deal, these things are as good as dinosaurs these days.
Five cylinder engines. The “economy of a four, power of a six” mantra never played out like it was supposed to. Just like rotaries they were best at converting gasoline directly into sweet sweet noise.

Apart from that whole NRA shit. We have the right to bare arms, but we suffer the consequences (melanomas in later years, due to the hole in the ozone layer).
Freedom means never having to steer.
That engine needs to be in a Miata. There, that was easy.
