This is a great concept. I haven't read any mention of it disabling notification LEDs though. If you were to get a message, I'm sure the person whom you don't want messing around with your phone would just pull the battery.

When I first started using my G1, often the gps would take forever to connect, but did eventually. Is it possible you're in an area where satellite reception is bad? Try Jeb_Hoge's recommendation. Try an application that pulls gps data and see what's up.

That's strange. I tested the GPS on multiple android devices, and they all worked independent of the data plan. They were t-mobile devices: HTC Dream (G1), MB501 (Qliq XT), and the Exhibit II.
