Well in anime characters have purple hair but they are still japanese. Some manga/anime tries to make sure that the ethnicity is portrayed in the artwork but those are typically more realistic anyway. Also in manga the bigger the eyes the easier it is to show emotion especially on the smaller panels in manga.

With art/literature you should provide context and not just glance over it and just say “that’s a nice piece” where it shows attitudes that would be unacceptable now because without the context you’re just passing on the same attitudes that make some works so offensive now.
