I do! Two, actually. I coach a high school rowing team but also just started another small side business. Kickstarter for my product is being reviewed by Kickstarter then it will be launched! But, I work on creating automation devices as my side business.

Does it make up for the fact that Macs are A LOT more expensive? Resale is always higher on things that cost more up-front :)

Shouldn't the classroom be preparing us for the real world? I have a hard time finding a job that doesn't give me a laptop :)
I find that the all-stars in the industry these days are masters at getting their computers to work for them. And they are also Google Ninjas.

What prevents it from working on different Pi's? Is it a part of the install? The OS? I clone Wheezy SD cards with some software I wrote and have distributed to over 10 different Pi's without a problem.

Agreed. Windows... ha, you are funny. My first suggestion to anyone trying to repurpose an old laptop is always to install Ubuntu if they are tech-savvy at all. Gives you so much more free speed you never thought you had!
