oh, my apologies - I understood it that you were implying that the government shouldn't get involved in banking practices at all (whether encouraging or regulating said practices). Sorry about that, must be the lack of sleep on my part!

So, looking through the comments, I'm seeing two distinct trends.

Let me put it this way - if the governments should not be concerned with what banks are doing, then they shouldn't be bailing out those same banks when their screwups catch up with them.
