I was watching something on TV and they focused on Drew’s first appearance on Johnny Carson. She loses her balance coming on to the set. It was revealed that her mother had given her a drink to “calm” her before the show. She was so young, so small. Appeared just after ET was released.

I never liked her stand-up, but speaking for myself, I thought she was astounding in The Color Purple. It made me sad that she went into comedy roles later on, because she really had the stuff.
