the 505 is a different era/architecture from the 405, but the 405 is still plenty capiable. it just has a tendancy to munch valves if its belt snaps. Once the valves are done for, the piston's doomed. If the piston's doomed, the conrod may try to make its escape. Read more

The angle on the thing is a bit odd, but it's a pretty good location, quick drop from the steering wheel and back.

Hopefully it hasn't been slipping enough to harden, but I suppose I'll find out once I tear it apart. At worst, I'll probably see if it will clean with some emery cloth. Do you know how long yours had been slipping?

This is where I can paraphrase Clarkson and note that it's not what you drive, but how you drive it. cruise control can sap economy too, if there's appreciable elevation changes. consistent throttle input is more effective a means. though maybe not something to be practiced in rush hour up a hill...
