The older ones are not THAT much harder to get parts for. I’ve got a 1957 (Oval window) and I’ve got no issues. Now, if you’re talking pre-1955, maybe a little bit. But, compared to so many other cars there is IMMENSE aftermarket support for VWs.

Part of the issue here is BMW’s “maintenance included” plan which offers infinitely long oil change intervals and “lifetime fill” trans and diffs. It’s cheaper to include maintenance if you do little maintenance.
