ive been using launchy. doesnt have all the advanced features but it keeps me from having to search my applications folder & thats really all i need.

The Xbox 360 is one of the best controllers I've found for playing roms, since its a usb controller and if you have an Xbox you already have a few and are probably comfortable/familiar w/it. Its supported by default on Windows machines. If you're on a mac (like me) you can get a driver to get it working here.
