Doug and some of the others were ALL ABOUT chocolate brown in those days. It’s taken me ten years to start liking earth tones again.

Vern was hands down the best. I loved his style and I watched his show on HGTV as well.

I would legit kick someone’s ass for redecorating my house like this. It’s not even avant-garde, it’s just fuckishness for fuckishness’ sake.

God—I had such a crush on Genevieve.

Different one!

Then there was that room where she nailed albums to the wall. All I could think was “Oh god - they are going to have to resurface that ENTIRE WALL.”

SO MUCH HAY THO.

I can’t say how often I’ve wanted a “House Hunters” episode to end like that.

Thanks for this article. This show was the start my design expertise that I now offer for free from my couch. And now thanks to Love it or List it Too i am offering my skills to Our Canadian brothers and sisters.

Hildy was a crazy bitch.

I kind of miss the old TLC. The simple makeover shows and A Wedding/Baby story were like the innocent, playing outside, PB&J-eating days of the network. With Trading Spaces and What Not to Wear they became a bratty tween, then a rebellious teenager and entitled college kid. I have no idea what they are now.

So many flowers! My favorite was when she painted a mural of herself on one wall:

Wow, did I love Trading Spaces during the Paige years. I was Team Vern and Team Genevieve all the way. Fascinating how the show can also serve as an accurate measure of TLC’s shift in style and tone as well. Thanks for this, Kate!

She explained the reason, which turns out, is one of the two things I legit learned from that show. The reason was, if she stepped in wet paint, she’d feel it on her feet before she tracked it all over the rest of the house. I now paint in bare feet/socks for exactly the same reason.

My all-time favourite was the episode with the woman who “hated brown” and her living room was redecorated in an “all-brown everything” theme and upon the reveal she was so pissed that she nearly choked out her friend that participated in the redecorating.

I remember 2 things about this show. The designer Genevieve Gorder would always parade around barefoot for some reason. Also, there was one episode where the redesign involved actual hay glued to the wall.

good lord, I miss this show. it was a weekend marathon staple in my house.

They were participating in a promotion that involved taking selfies put on by the stadium. It had just been announced right before this clip.

It’s also worth noting that the announcers were encouraging people to take selfies so....

Bottom row, far right. That’s me in most social situations.
