As I have a pair of XM2's I decided to try it out, but they didn’t turn off after 5 minutes. Granted I literally just updated to the new firmware right before testing. But after an hour of them just being on without any music playing they didn’t turn off nor did the ANC turn off.

HEIF/HEVC was not created by Apple at all. It was created by the Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) to be used as a format with superior attributes to JPEG. Apple just happened to adopt it first in iOS, but major adoption I’m sure will come soon enough.
