My goldfish got a Viking Longboat funeral.
Thanks, vulvasaurus, and BTW I love your handle.
They look like just the thing to hold up my long underwear bottoms here in Alaska. Like sweatpants, long johns are notoriously too short in the upper leg and have too-stretchy waists, resulting in a crotch riding just above my knees. The chaps could even be worn with a set of shoulder suspenders to increase “lift.”…
Given that this article refers to “wild animal[s],” not solely wild predators. it’s important to clarify that the best response will vary based on the species encountered. It is correct to say that you should not generally run from predators. Instead you should try look big, non-threatening (don’t look bears or wolves…
Seems like white would work better. Keeps the water cooler, which helps aquatic organisms, and also reduces evaporation.
Could not agree more. We compost non-meat and non-fish during the warm months (composting doesn’t really work in Alaska from mid-September through most of May) and put it all in the trash the rest of the time. Having worked for a large urban water and wastewater utility, I roll my eyes when people think potable water…
It is progress, because the prospect of drafting young women will help our President and Congress make better choices when they are tempted to rush into a war they won’t personally experience. Until the risks of combat accrue to everyone, including the 1% and their sons and daughters (those without bone spurs, at…
Sandbags, or more likely, lead weights, are only used in small planes — single or twin engine props. But it’s still important to ensure that the plane’s center of gravity and gross weight are within acceptable parameters on ALL aircraft. With fewer pax the overall weight is not likely to be the concern, but the bodies…
I’ve always used the kind of pants hangers that clamp the ends of the legs together, i.e. the pants hang upside down. They take up less space in the closet that way and the garments’ weight keeps the legs from getting wrinkled. Plus, you can usually hang more than one pair from the same hanger. I have several wooden…

Alaska salmon, halibut, and King crab legs. Rotisserie chicken. Whole bean coffee. Dry dog food. Six-packs of firm tofu. Bananas. Campari tomatoes. Box wine. Basmati and short-grain brown rice. Dave’s bread. Wool socks. Plain Greek yogurt. LED light bulbs. Ink jet printer cartridge refills. Nuts. All way, way cheaper…
I live in Alaska. We have no salt mines in the state and are not connected to the rest of the world by rail, so anything that melts snow and ice has to be shipped here. We also have little sun in the winter, a small population so limited government snow removal budgets, and very, very long winters.
I guess you’ve never lived in rural Alaska, either.
I continue to be amused by all the “expert” advice about staying warm using technology etc. How is it that planes have been flying, and people have been living through winters, in my state with few instances of frostbite or hypothermia? Homo sapiens has lived here for over 13,000 years, i.e for long before artificial…

As an older woman with some experience in this area, but who also knows how to read, I reluctantly have to point out that the new DOJ language doesn’t say what you are claiming it says, Ms. Gupta. The language you quote says that domestic violence INCLUDES physical violence. It does not say that domestic violence is…
Among other things, the Bundys built a road on an archaeological site to make driving more convenient for themselves. It destroyed the site, which would be a felony if I did it.
“. . . Trump weighed 239 pounds back in January of 2019. . .”
Not in my state, unfortunately. The nearest EPS facility is 1500 nautical miles away, as the raven flies, across another country. Since our recycling gets backhauled via barge, the real distance is closer to 2000 miles and takes ~three days at sea.
Menstrual blood has all kinda good things in it, too. Just sayin’.
If “trekk” means “pull” in Norwegian, how come the sled that attaches to my waist via poles, that I use to haul gear when Nordic skiing to a remote cabin here in Alaska, is called a pulk???
